Artist Biographies: The Doors Rock Band

Jim Morrison was the iconic front man for The Doors. The Doors, a 1960’s rock band that hailed from Los Angeles and rocked the world.  Jim Morrison joined in the band by Ray Manzarek on keyboards, John Densmore on drums and guitarist Robby Krieger to complete the famous quartet.  “If The Doors of perception were cleansed everything would appear to man as it is, infinite” , is the William Blake quote from the book The Doors of Perception, that the group derived their name from.  The Doors were famous for the strange antics of their singer and pushing the boundaries that were accepted in society during the decade of the 1960’s.  Jim Morrison pushed the limits of public behavior, and art as his lyrics were either poetic and magical or crass and indecipherable depending on who was listening.  Jim Morrison died in 1971 and although the remaining members tried to continue for a few unsuccessful years, the Doors became extinct in 1973.

The Doors were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993 and it was a well deserved honor to commemorate this influential band from the 1960’s.  Elektra Records signed the doors in 1966 and released their first album titled, The Doors in 1967.  All that The Doors did came up gold as album after album met with success. They released in order, Strange Days(1968), Waiting for the Sun(1969), The Soft Parade, Morrison Hotel(1970), Absolutely Live (1968),  and L.A. Woman(1971).  The Doors were able to churn out 14 Platinum, 19 Gold and 5 Multi-Platinum awards for these creations in the United States alone.  The Doors accumulated eight consecutive gold albums, the first American band to ever accomplish this feat. Even though their active performances ceased in 1973, the popularity of their music still has momentum today. According to sources from record companies they have sold over 32.5 million records in the US and over 100 million worldwide.  You can still hear Robby Krieger and Ray Manzarak perform today as the group Manzarek-Krieger or Ray Manzarak and Robby Kreiger of The Doors.  There are legal issues that prevent them from performing exclusive doors sets of music.
