Artist Biographies: The Michael Jackson Story
Michael Jackson was born on August 29, 1958, and was found dead in his home on June 25, 2009. Michael Jackson was a pop singer with an astounding career that began at a very early age. He also became a successful dancer, actor, choreographer and entertainer that changed the face of pop music in the 1980s. Michael Jackson is also known as the King of Pop because of his success in both music and dance of the music he created.
The Michael Jackson story is one of many twists and turns. Michael was born the seventh child to the Jackson family. They were working class Americans and lived in Indiana. When Michael was just five years old he became the lead singer for the group the Jackson 5, which was him and his four older brothers. They formed in 1964 and sang and toured until 1971.
Michael Jackson began working solo then and had limited success in the music business. He honed his music writing skills from the sidelines and when he did release his solo album Thriller in 1982, it broke the record books in many areas. Michael contributed to the world of dance, fashion, music, entertaining and philanthropy like no one had before him. His became an instant sensation.
Michael’s music was heavy influenced by synthesizer and had a dance beat to it. He used his music to not only change the way music sounded, but how people got to see it. With his smash hits Beat It, Billie Jean and Thriller, he incorporated videos with a story to tell and a dance routine. The use of the videos also prompted MTV, which was new at the time, to become a staple in the households with teenagers.
Michael Jackson used dance moves to effectively promote himself as being a leader in the industry. Michael Jackson was known for the Moonwalk, which he debuted in the video Billie Jean. It was copied many times over and in many ways, making it a pop reference of the time.
Other songs that followed later were still popular, but not runaway smashes like Jackson celebrated earlier with Thriller. Some of these songs included Black or White, Scream and Bad.
Michael is one of the few artists to be inducted in to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice. He is in as a musician, but he is also included as the one and only dancer from the rock era.
Michael Jackson has also been awarded many times in the music industry. He holds multiple Guinness Book of World Records for his sales and attendance at concerts. He has been awarded 13 Grammy Awards, been given the Grammy Legend Award, and the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
Michael Jackson received more American Music Awards than any other recording artist with 26. He has the most %231 songs in the US during his solo career over every other artist with 13.
Michael Jackson has sold over 750 million records between his group and solo career. That number makes him the most popular entertainer ever according to Guinness.
Besides his music, Michael Jackson is also known for his philanthropic work. He created Heal the World, which is his personal charity to feed children around the world. Between the other charities he supports, he donated over $300 million of his own money during his life. It also makes him the pop star who has actively supported the most charities in history.
Unfortunately, aspects of Michael’s life overshadowed his career at the end of his life. In 1993, he was accused of child sexual molestation. Michael Jackson was acquitted, but then later charged a second time in 2005, which he was acquitted once again.
While practicing for his This Is It tour, Michael Jackson was found dead in his home. It was ruled a homicide as officials believe he was administered an illegal drug by his personal physician.
